Loads List: Off Grid Solar Power System Design - Step 1

Hi. I'm Amy Beaudet from the altE Store. Thank you for watching the first of our video series on designing an off-grid solar system.This first video is appropriately called, Step 1 - Loads List. Figuring out how much power you need is a critical step that many people try to skip.

Designing a solar system without knowing your loads is like being asked how much gas do I need to drive, without knowing what type of vehicle or how far you are driving. Let's start at the beginning. Here's a basic schematic of a typical off-grid system.

You'll notice there is a generator in the drawing. That is there for instances when there is not enough sun to provide the power needed, generally Winter, and if you have an occasional load that requires more power than your system can provide.

For instance, if you needed to use a welder for a project, it may not make sense to design the whole system to be able to accommodate a tool that is used once a year. So having a generator available for occasional use makes good sense.

So keep this option in mind when designing your system. This video series will cover the major steps of designing an off-grid system. Let's start with step 1, analyzing your load.

So let's go over the steps to determine the amount of power you need. Start with a loads analysis. Unlike a grid tied system where you can just base the system on how much power you want to offset, an off-grid system needs to provide all of your power. With an off-grid system, you need to take a good look at what you are powering, and how long you need to power it. Going off-grid often takes changes to your lifestyle.

It's not as simple as just saying, "I'm tired of paying the electric company, I'm taking my whole house off grid and stick it to the man". You have to figure worst case scenarios; winter time, with little to no sun for days. Unless you are in a climate that has long sunny days all year round, most people who are doing a year round off-grid system will have a generator available to pitch in in the winter.

I read a quote from an off-gridder who said, "if it's going to be a sunny day, I can cook waffles for breakfast. If it's cloudy, I have cereal." When designing the system, you can't just say it's an "average" size system.

No such thing. You also can't base it on the square footage of the house or cabin. One cabin may have air conditioning, an electric stove and water heater, electric washer and dryer, a fridge and freezer, and the other may have LED lights and a laptop. Which one is "average"?

Who's to say? Do you think the same system will work for both cabins, even though they are the same physical size? You need to make a complete list of every electrical device you will be using, how much power it uses, and how long each day it will be on.

Don't forget anything. All UL listed equipment will have a power label on it.

Since volts x amps = watts, you should be able to get all of the information you need off the labels. Here's some examples from walking around my house. You can see some do list the watts, some list a voltage range, some and amps, and some list the DC voltage and amps used from a power block that is converting the AC voltage to DC. If the label only lists the volts and amps, but not watts, you can multiply the volts times amps to get watts. Once you have watts, you'd then multiply the watts x hours a day it is on, and you get watt hours a day.

This is not perfect, as it may just be listing the start up current, and not the continuous power, but it is a starting point. If the voltage listed is DC instead of AC, you would still multiply the DC volts by the amps to get watts. If the voltage listed is a range, like 100 to 240 volts, you would use the voltage that is used in your area, for instance, 120V for North American outlets. Some loads, like a refrigerator or a pump or furnace fan, are not on continuously and have a high surge when the compressor turns on, making it difficult to determine how much accumulated power, or watt hours, it uses throughout the day. If it is Energy Star rated, you can find the Energy Star Label, either on the appliance or on the Energy Star web site.

 

If it is not Energy Star rated, and you are looking to power it with solar, it may be worth it to replace it with an Energy Star fridge. The Energy Star label will tell you the average annual kwh used.

From there, you can simply divide it by the number of days in the years, 365, to see how many watt hours it uses in a day. In this example, 383kwh a year, divided by 365 days in a year = 1.049kWh a day.

You can multiply that by 1000 to determine how many Watt hours a day, as a kilo watt is 1000 watts. A more accurate way of determining the power consumption is to measure it with a device like a Kill-a-watt meter.

You plug the meter into the outlet, and then plug your device into the meter. It will show you an instantaneous wattage, volts, amps, and accumulated watt hours. It also shows how long the unit was measuring, so you can divide the watt hours by hours to see how many watts it is drawing on average.

Multiply that by 24 hours, and you have how much it actually used in a day. For example, if the Kill-a-watt says it used 1260 Wh over 30 hours, that averages 42W. 42W x 24 hours in a day = 1008Wh a day. Taking it one step further, 1008Wh / 1000 = 1.008kWh.

Alright, now that we know what each device is using, what do we do with that info? Using a load calculator can help you create the loads list.

To use it, you enter the appliance name, quantity, how many watts it is in AC or DC .

You'll know it is AC if it plugs into a wall outlet. If it is DC, it runs off a battery, like your cell phone car charger. On at the same time indicates that the system needs to be big enough to power those devices that may be on simultaneously.

For example, you have no control over when your fridge compressor will turn on, or your well pump, but you can control when you turn on a light. So if there is a chance that multiple devices may be on at once, you must select On at Same Time.

That will help you determine how big of an inverter you need to handle that power if they all turn on at once.

Some devices also have a high momentary surge, like a fridge or motor. It uses 2 to 4 times as much power for a few seconds when it first turns on. You need to keep track of that as well, because if your inverter cannot handle that surge, the device may not be able to turn on, or you could damage the inverter. That's it for the first video in this series of designing an off-grid PV system.

They have 370k plus users... ...and it's a big database , lots of people to manage.They say how fast it is, it works really well to manage downloads... ... memberships, renewals and so on. I'd like to mention, I forgot where I saw it ......we've been going for ......here... ...they've been going for 17 years ......this is not just a quick project, It only lasts 1-2 years and then it goes ahead. Let's go through a few of these features.

Hi in today's video review we're doing a product from Clickbank called  Empire. Empire is about getting traffic and they say in just 30 minutes a day you'll be able to  make 128 dollars per day with free traffic this is from Fergal Downes.

Fergal's been publishing  and selling products for over 10 years now this is a Clickbank product if you go on Clickbank  it'll look like this right here free traffic system flood your sites with free traffic it's  it's converting anyway people are buying it so we're going to do a review of it it has to do  with free traffic it's empire from Fergal Downes so anyway before we slide into the review for the  product Empire on Clickbank just wanted to show you i did mention that Fergal has been publishing.

For many years now these are some stats from his profile and you can look at all  the products he's published you know i don't know how often he publishes maybe once a month  maybe a little bit longer than that but there's a lot of products here  that have been published and this goes on and on and on now the thing is there is also an  important thing is that he has a Facebook support group that you can join and you're encouraged to  join on the home page so the areas that you will learn in this video the areas.

I want to cover is  number one i will explain in my opinion what this product is number two does the training help you  to use the product in other words is it clear enough that you as a newbie can use it is this  newbie friendly is this product newbie friendly is it something a new internet marketer can use  to make money number four do i recommend this as an ethical business model and i'm looking  at that as a long-term business model number five is it worth the cost that you're paying  for it is it worth it and number six downsides to using the training i'll cover them things i  don't like about.

The training things i think you should be warned about let's move on to  the review for empire by fergal downs so once you've signed in after you've made your purchase  this is the page that you're taken to fergal has a welcome video here and then we've got the normal  things here and encourage you to sign up with our support group which we just talked about.

And then here's number four click to start empire and what you do is you click on that and you'll  go to the dashboard now he's promoting this is a membership which i believe is meant to  be a training membership and now you're paying i think i paid one or two dollars  for a 14-day trial basis for us and then it'll be 37 dollars a month after that i believe that's to  be part of this membership the empire membership by frugal downs now currently this is module one  and as you go through there's i believe 13 lessons here most of these are short videos.

A few of them have some things down below that give you information about let's go to this one  here now this will talk about the facebook group and then he promotes signing up his facebook group.

And then there's also the two groups that he has incorporated into this plan that he wants  you to sign up for and become friends in these two groups the first one is the im watchdog is brent  rutucky's facebook group and there's over 15 000 members and then there's art flairs  facebook group including and also don't forget fergls so like i say that he  is promoting these two groups because they're large and he has a working relationship with them  but he also likes to promote his own group which.

I think is over maybe twelve thousand  fifteen thousand people okay it's around fifteen thousand people in his private group so anyway.

The relationship to facebook is the fact that this whole course sold course is based upon  using facebook making friends on these groups he even admits in some of the training in here that  there's a lot of spamming that goes on inside these facebook groups i've made a video about  adding comments and automatically adding comments and spamming the likes of facebook  and how it's not really a good business model.

You can check that video out the links up in the upper  right hand corner anyway as we move in each one of these videos has different things that come with  it like pm on your phone talks about personal messaging he also has some information about  some examples of what he believes should be how to personal message person on facebook  with links that you're trying to sell products to and the sales 1000 sales formulas like.

Your  secret formula training but these videos are not i found it to be rather vague  not much detail they're all really short i think the longest one's like 11 minutes long  most of them are under four minutes training is kind of vague there is i checked the method two.

Method two is not available it says you have to wait 14 days so let's pass the trial so i tried  that but however i did discover that method three did open to me as i looked at it and it's called  my lead gen that's a separate product that he sold and he teaches in here and that's going to be  setting you up it costs around 60 a month to set up lead generation getting leads.

Daily through sending emails out and kind of like spamming people with emails hitting them  hard and heavy he also has in here a group where he's promoting setting up your own autoresponder  not exactly sure why that is but this person has been set up with him through facebook and  here's the thing that concerned me as i went to contact this person and i get a warning  get a warning about a possible phishing expedition from this site so i got the heck out of here  really quick some of this is probably outdated it may even be unsafe for you to play around with.

You don't want any fishing done on your site or on your computer so the thing is just keep in mind  these methods i believe are supposed to be added but i don't know how long this has been up  method 4 was actually available too even though it says not supposed to be available to after 74 days  okay so i have some further thoughts about the spam spamming people with emails we're going to.

Look at that real quick and then we'll move into some of the otos that were presented to me after  i made the purchase so using empire i believe you will be doing this you'll be one of these people  sending this is like one of my spam folders i've you know i recognize a few of these names most  the names i've never heard of before so this is it's going to go in your spam folder right here  and you're going to say you know and do you expect you're going to get sales i don't know  maybe you will you may not so do you want to be spamming people having the emails go  into your their spam folders and if for some reason they don't and they're in their inbox.

Is that something that you want to have is that how you want to have your business represented  okay so i just uh purchased Empire from Fergal Downes and it's in the Clickbank product this.

 Is oto1 we're going to say no thanks i want us to supercharge the program i'm going to say no  thanks that's ot01 okay so i'm going to give you a downsell it's just the otos we'll say no thanks  ten dollars off making only seven dollars hold on a second second oto number two they will make  that no thanks instant five dollar discount this video is unavailable it's a little problem in the  say five dollars get my best traffic sources for just twelve dollars no thanks and then  there's oto three the video works on this one it's access this must be aiden i know Aiden  and Fergal i'll say no thanks.

This whole thing is about posting comments getting people to respond  fitting yourself into the group uh supply and he doesn't even go into details about  what to do he just kind of gives you a few lack of digital kind of comments that he would make um the  idea is i have seen it expressed a lot better from other trainings but the idea is to use facebook  facebook accounts you know joining groups adding friends you know like he does in this video here  he's going through now this is where he told you about the three groups that he wants you to join  he wants you to add buyer friends from them and then post messaging personal messaging.

Private messaging on to friends after they've comment on things comments that  you made in a group that's what this whole thing is about is using facebook to create  traffic and then people will after you've sent out a bunch of emails to them they'll respond and buy.

Products from you that you're promoting and he's telling you to promote his Empire  product and this one and product three he's talking about the secret late gen product  that he wants you to promote there that's kind of the gist of what Empire is  does the training help you that much i didn't find it to help that much kind of gives you a broad  stroke if you will a broad brush of what the idea is that he's promoting but it's not that detailed  and if you're a newbie you may not quite get what he's getting.

At  he does some provide some emails email things let's let's show you a couple of them  okay like in the lesson two done for you product this.

Is talking about signing up and checking his  leaderboard at the end of each month to see how he did for promoting his products then he's talking  gives you information and directions on how to sign up for clickbank.

And digistore24.com now i have done a video about digi store 24 and you can if you're not familiar  with it check out the video there'll be a card up in the upper right hand corner for you on that.

Clickbank is talking about how to promote the product and writes out that's this is one of the  steps that did go into some detail a lot of these are just getting just short videos let's look at  this one here eight now he's doing here is now he does encourage you to use his product because he  obviously wants to sell his product and the whole thing is kind of self-inclusive  if you will is it newbie friendly i i don't know yes and no do i recommend.

It as an ethical  business practice i'd say probably not i don't like the idea as i said with the earlier video  about spamming and using viral comments and post you'll see check out on my video that what i think  about that now i can see the downsides to using this training is that you're just gonna turn and  burn a lot through a lot of people on a lot of lists i don't think that highlight of Empire  the Empire from Fergal Downes from Clickbank i'm gonna rate this as like a three out of ten  it is methods.

That can be used and can be used effectively but i think he's just kind of lazy and  sloppy with how he set this up and his membership site for 37 a month i would definitely avoid it  i don't see that it's worth your time or your money especially because you can do these you  can get free trainings they're a lot cheaper than this and you'll have the information there that  you can use all the time this you have to keep paying 37 dollars a month to keep access to it  so again i give it a 3 out of 10.

- Whenever you see an advertisement for a service that is offering you the ability to build an online business in just a few steps, and then start making money almost immediately, does it seem just a little too good to be true? - We have been able to live off of the website for at least the last five years. It's given us the freedom to be together during the day, which has been amazing.

- So how did this happen? There were two steps, and the details are coming up next. So how did Elizabeth reach the position of being able to enable her family to live off the income of the online business for five years? All this without the traditional methods of Google and Amazon.

Grammarrevolution.com is dedicated to enabling people to learn and teach grammar in an easy way using a method called sentence diagramming. There are two key steps to her success. The first step was creating quality content related to grammar and sentence diagramming using the unique tools for online business owners developed by Solo Build It!. Following that process has brought her between 15 and 30 thousand visitors a day.

That's free, organic traffic supplied by the search engines such as Google. And it's not just in one day or one month or some fluke, it's year after year. - First of all I should say in Solo Build It! they bring you through a process to have you look at whatever your idea is kind of from different angles, as well as other ideas. And so I found that what I was interested in had enough supply and demand for me to pursue.

But I did come to Solo Build It! with an idea to build a website educating people about grammar with sentence diagrams. Just because in my past, I had such a negative experience with sentence diagrams and with grammar. And I knew that I could be better, I knew that people could learn this stuff pretty quickly and pretty easily if they just learned about it. And so I wanted to provide that.

So when I was going through the education, the action guide, when I got to a certain point, I had to research all of these terms to see if there would be enough for me to provide information. Now, it's funny because people aren't looking for sentence diagramming. That's one of the things and it's a lost art. So, when I-- - Amazing. - Yeah, so but when I was looking at the numbers, there were people searching for what is an adjective, what is a noun?

Things that I knew I could write a compelling article to help people learn this stuff. And then I could also show them hey, if you learn it this way with these sentence diagrams, it's going to make it easier. - So part one of Elizabeth's success story was knowing that she had a subject area that was in high demand with very little real competition, a key element in a successful business.

So what was part two? Well here we come to monetization.

In Solo Build It!, we talk a lot about the need for passion to drive a successful online business. Not only was Elizabeth's content really demonstrating her passion, but the same approach also applied to her monetization strategy. It's quite interesting, even in an online business, and a bricks and mortar business, there can be surprises. She wasn't finding that affiliate products and pay-per-click traditional sources of revenue were working, so what to do?

Well, she'd built up such a relationship with her customers, they told her. - I thought I would have, I thought I was gonna monetize with Google Ads and Amazon affiliate links. But it turns out that Google Ads for grammar are very, very cheap. You get part of a cent for each click. So that wasn't making very much money.

And the same thing was true for affiliate products I was recommending on Amazon. I had a hard time finding really applicable I guess affiliate products for my audience.

 

There were books that they weren't written by me, so the person didn't feel like they had that much connection to the book first of all. And then also, I think it like was 4% or something that you got from any purchase through Amazon. So I ended up just doing my own products.

And because people were emailing me actually, they were saying, hey I went through your whole website, this was maybe seven years ago or eight years ago, I went through your whole website and I copied and pasted everything, and I printed it out, but it took me a really long time.

Could you please put it in an eBook and then I would buy it. And then I thought oh, that's how I can monetize this. - So your customers told you what they wanted. - Yeah, which is helpful.

You have to do what they're asking for. And it's something that maybe you wouldn't necessarily predict. - So the key to Elizabeth's financial success has been her own products. These are made up of eBooks, DVDs, and online courses. So how does it work?

- I have one main lead magnet.

It's called The Beginner's Guide to Grammar. At least on the bottom of every page, and then also on my home page. And I do have a couple of other free offers that are a little more focused, but the main one that I have on all the pages is that Beginner's Guide to Grammar. And that appeals to most people who are on the website.

So they sign up to get that, that's just a PDF file. And actually right after they sign up for that, they also see a free offer, a free plus shipping offer for a documentary that my husband and I made about grammar education a few years ago. So, basically we have all of these DVDs and we wanna get them out there.

And so after people sign up, then they see this free plus shipping offer, and then if they go for that, then I send them a DVD, and then a lot of people after watching the DVD are motivated to learn and then maybe they would come back to the site and purchase one of my books or courses. But also, right after someone signs up, they are sent through a welcome sequence of two or three emails.

And in those emails I walk through, I give our most popular content in one of the emails, so I have, there's maybe nine links for people to go to the website. And then I have another email that tells people a little bit more about our biggest course and basically says if you wanna learn this in a more structured way, if you wanna learn it in a more streamlined way, then you should check out this course. And I have some samples, and then they can click on that, and they can purchase it that way. Or people can just come to the website and purchase it right from being on the website. So there are many different funnels I guess.

Some of those are for really low-level products, like a $2.99 download of the word lists of the parts of speech.

And then some of those sales are $139 sales, so there's kind of something for everyone there. - So for somebody that really wants to monetize, is creating products a path that you definitely recommend? - I would definitely recommend writing your own books, or whatever niche you're in, having your own products.

I think it's great, I have a lot of ownership over them. I love having my own product because part of it too, like I was saying before, is you build that rapport with the person, and they already kind of know a little bit what your book, or what your course, or whatever the thing is is going to be like because they have met you on the pages of your website.

- It sounds like a great relationship to have with your future customers. What kind of relationship would you like with your customers? Only after you've really developed quality relationships can you expect an online visitor to buy.

How to Build an Email List Fast and for Free — 5 List Building Tips

- So one of the biggest keys for building a successful business is building an email list, but it can be challenging. So in this video, I'm gonna be sharing my five biggest tips for building an email list fast using YouTube. Coming up. (camera shutters) Hey what's up guys, Sean here with THiNK Media bringing you the best tips and tools for building your influence with online video and on this channel we do a lot of tech gear reviews, but also tips and strategy videos just like this one. So if you're new here, consider subscribing.

And hey, at any point during the video check out a show summary and show notes in the YouTube description below. Let's jump into the tips. So one of the big mistakes that I see a lot of people making is actually not focusing on building their email list. I think there's a misconception that goes around that thinks, oh it's not important and a lot of focus and attention is on getting more followers on social media, getting more subscribers on YouTube, but there's a huge problem with that and that is this.

You don't own those communication channels.

We've seen it happen on Facebook. Organic reach at one time was really good there, but then as time went one, less and less people are seeing your posts, even if they've subscribed, even if they're a fan of yours that doesn't even mean that you can get your message to them. And even here on YouTube, most channels have less than 10% of their subscribers even seeing their videos in their main subscription feed. And that's a huge problem, right, because just because someone subscribed to you or following you on social media does not mean you're reaching them with your message or your content.

And so that's why I always encourage entrepreneurs, creatives and video influencers to be building an email list cause it gives you an opportunity to get in front of the community that you're building, the tribe you're building, despite what happens with social media platforms, algorithms, or even if a platform was to disappear tomorrow.

Essentially any of your social media presence is on rented land, but your email list is something that you can own and then a group of people that you're able to communicate with in a deeper way over the long haul. And currently here on YouTube between 100 to 200 new people are signing up for our various email lists across the various brands that I'm working with.

And this is organic. These are people who are interested in the niche that I'm in and the message that we're communicating. And that's not from paid traffic.

We'll do that too. We'll do ads sometimes places and we can even drive those numbers up, but that is literally just from YouTube so I really believe that YouTube is one of the best ways to build a thriving email list. And to illustrate the power of this even further a recent THiNK Media newsletter that we sent out got an open rate of 35.96%. That's a pretty good open rate in the email marketing space, but that's also pretty incredible because I'll tell you this.

A Facebook post that we put up a lot of times might have a reach of 150 people, even though I have thousands of Facebook likes. Instagram has an algorithm, even Twitter does now too. That doesn't mean that just because you have a certain number of followers that your content is getting in front of them, but out of our email list, 30% of people saw the content and was able to read through and open that email.

You can't get close to that on any other social platform. There's no social network that comes close to that kind of attention that still exists in email.

And the click through rate on that same email was almost 3%. That means that of everybody that opened it, 3% of people clicked through to go watch a video, to go check out a piece of content, to see a live stream and that again, click through rates on social media don't come close to that let alone someone even seeing it in the first place to being able to click it. And so I really want to encourage you to be thinking about building an email list as part of your overall strategy online. But how do you actually do it? Let's jump in to these five tips.

Tip number one is you need to pick an email service provider. This is also known as a CRM and these are services like MailChimp, Aweber, Infusionsoft, ConvertKit, I currently use GetResponse and I want to encourage you, you can do a lot of research here, but don't get stuck here.

It does matter, but the important thing is just to get started. But one power tip is if you start with a certain email provider make sure ahead of time that you're able to export the email list and the contact information that you get from them. And that way you can switch at any time.

For me, I actually started with MailChimp a few years ago because I was able to use just the free version for quite a while before needing to switch to the paid version, however I eventually learned that they weren't very favorable to affiliate marketing and I think that affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to generate income online so I switched to GetResponse. And since that time I've absolutely loved them. It's been amazing. They not only have a good basic model, but eventually you can move into some advanced automation so whether you're a beginner or whether you're even more of an advanced marketer, GetResponse has been pretty incredible. And so I'll list some resources below so you can research this a little bit and even check those out.

And what's cool is you can also of course always do free trials with things like GetResponse to just test it out, see if it works for you, how you like it and things like that. Tip number two is create something cool to give away in exchange for a person's contact information for their email list. And so in our space this is called either freemium or a freebee or a lead magnet and there is where if you've been around THiNK Media for very long you know that at the end of the video I'm like hey if you want to download the free THiNK Media TV video gear buyers guide I'll link it up in the description below. That's a free gift and instead of just saying hey jump on our newsletter it's saying hey here's something actually cool that's actually valuable and you can download that in exchange for signing up for the email list. And so a couple power tips here.

The first one is make it really valuable.

Like you actually want it to be cool and it doesn't have to be a PDF. It can be an audio file. It can be a video that is only available privately. It's not a public YouTube video or it's embedded on a page somewhere.

It could be a checklist, it could be just something quick and cool that's gonna get results for the people that want those results in your space and in your niche. And then the second quick tip is you want to make sure that it also is specific. And what I mean is when you have a specific free gift for people you want to be able to know why they signed up for that list so that you can talk to them based on that interest.

For example, on my channel Sean Cannell I actually have a free download that's about productivity and high performance in life and so people who sign up for that email list, what are they interested in? High performance, productivity in life.

The people who sign up for a download of the best video gear for every budget for YouTube, what are they interested in? Well cameras, maybe YouTube tips, maybe not even YouTube tips, maybe just video gear like hey I want to save money on lenses, I don't know all about cameras so help me, give me the shortcut.

 

So then inside of my email list provider GetResponse those are segments and I can talk to just this group of people and just that group of people in different ways. If I talk to the high performance group and I was like hey guys you know a new camera came out. What are they gonna do?

Unsubscribe. That's not why we signed up. That's not what we were interested in, don't bother us with that. And then on the flip side, if I was like I know you downloaded a free gear guide, but I'd love to tell you about how to be more productive, what are they gonna do? Unsubscribe because it's not why they signed up in the first place.

So I encourage you to strategically think about the free gift that you get and the tribe of people and community of people that are signing up for that. It gives you how to talk to them, but it also clarifies for you what they would be interested in and what they wouldn't be interested in so that you can add consistent value over time and not have people unsubscribe because you're random and all over the place. The third tip and the next step is to then set up a landing page or this is a lead capture page or a squeeze page. And you've seen these before and here's a couple examples of various ones that we have for our brands and this is just a place where now you can say here's the free gift that you're gonna get, whether it's a free video, whether it's a free download and if you enter your name and email or just your email then I'm gonna send you this and that gives people a way to actually sign up so they can get on your email list.

What's cool here is that most of the email service providers actually allow you to create landing pages right inside.

So there are other services for this, but then maybe you need to sign up for something else. That might even cost more money. So when you're getting started you can definitely use the landing pages or capture pages or squeeze pages that are just a part of your current email service provider. Okay so you've picked an email service provider, you've created a free gift, you've set up a landing page, now you're ready for tip number four and that is to give call to actions for people to sign up and download your free gift and join your list in your YouTube videos. And I encourage you can do this in every video.

Typically at the end and always tie it in to the content of your video. And so if you had a video with five tips on how to meal prep for the week, by the end of the video you could say hey if you want to actually download my grocery shopping list checklist you can grab that as well and it ties into the content of your YouTube video and it gives people the next step to go to another level with you, to download something with you and then to also join your inner circle.

And again, even that person maybe watched the video, maybe they didn't subscribe on YouTube or maybe they subscribe on YouTube, but your videos aren't showing up on their feed. The cool thing is if they've signed up for your email list then you can send out a weekly newsletter and have another way to drive views, to drive traffic to your content, to your video, to whatever it is you're promoting and so what we've done on video influencers on THiNK Media is just consistently video after video we've put these videos out and at the end of every video we give call to actions to different free gifts that we have depending on what the topic is, what the niche is.

And then tip number five is to actually repeat this process over and over again.

And so here's a couple actionable tips here. The first one is again you can repeatably talk about it in consistent videos. Maybe you post a video a week on YouTube. Every video you can talk about your free gift and joining your inner circle or your newsletter or whatever it is.

But then you can eventually expand into creating more freemiums, more lead magnets, whatever you want to call them that can also serve different micro tribes of your overall niche and your overall community. And so if you never set this up before I encourage you to only focus on one free gift, building one segmented audience and just building up one thing at a time. But eventually you can expand like we've done. And so we have some free gifts that are related to free video trainings about product reviews. We've got free gifts related to just smart phone accessories or just video gear accessories.

YouTube tips over on video influencers. So this takes times to build and I don't encourage you to do five at once. Just focus on one, but if you repeat this process over and over and over again that is how you can build a sizable email list. So I hope that you can see the value in building an email list and that these five tips were helpful, but I realize that I didn't spend a lot of time actually talking about how to get views and get a ton of traffic on your YouTube videos so that they can watch your video and then join your email list. Self-publishing on Amazon is by far my favorite passive income source and easier to start than most people know.

In the last four years, I’ve published 11 books, making almost $108,000 and averaging over $2,100 a month in the last year. In this video, I’ll show you exactly how much I make on each book self-publishing on Amazon from my most profitable books to the least. I’m then going to reveal three secrets to make self-publishing passive income you collect every single month. That’s the real trick to self-publishing a book. Anyone can write and publish a book on Amazon.

The real secret is following these three steps to make your book a source of passive income, generating cash flow every month. If you’re just starting out, I’ve got a free handout on nine tips that will help you write your book and publish as fast as possible. You’ll find everything you need in these nine tips to get your book done and publish within two months.

Now I want to get to those three secrets to passive income publishing so I’ll leave a link to that handout in the video description below. So self-publishing was one of my first income sources when starting my blogs in 2014 and this is a natural fit for anyone with a blog or YouTube channel.

You’re already creating content, it takes almost no work to repurpose it into a book and self-publish. And the income has been astonishing over these last four years. I started with just one book in 2015 and have built it to a library of 12 books including one on how to self-publish that I just launched. I added another full-length book and a series of four guides in 2015.

I followed that with another book in 2016, three in 2017 and two this year.

If I hadn’t taken my focus off publishing to do other things, I could easily have another four books published and be making even more a month. I sell around 670 books a month on Amazon Kindle, print paperback and audio version. Over the last 54 months, I’ve collected almost $108,000 in book sales with my oldest book making almost twenty grand so far. Now you can see that not every book is going to be a huge success. I’ve got five books that have made over $10,000 so far and three that have made less than $1,500 so there’s a bit of a numbers game going on.

Publish at least a few books and you’re going to have some big money makers as well as a few on which you don’t make as much but look at this average. I average $200 a month on each of the 11 books here, almost $2,200 a month and what I’m going to show you next will make this almost completely passive income.

Honestly, I do almost nothing to keep these books ranked on Amazon and making money every month. It’s a check I know will be in my bank account on the 29th and 30th of every single month, money I can rely on. Now I want to share three tips to getting started self-publishing, three ideas that will guarantee you make that passive income every month.

But first, I want to get your feedback on this. What is your biggest roadblock, that one thing that’s keeping you from self-publishing a book. Scroll down and let me know in the comments and I’ll make sure I create a few videos out that can help. So I’m going to give you three steps to make your self-publishing income totally passive and this is more important that most new authors know.

A lot start out thinking writing and publishing the book is the hardest part but then wonder why they don’t make money after that first month.

There are millions of books on Amazon and a lot of them have put tens of thousands in marketing dollars behind the launch. Writing your book is the easy part, keeping it ranked every month to generate cash flow, that’s the hard part. We’ll cover these three tricks but understand the idea is to get enough sales each month to jumpstart the Amazon sales machine, right? Amazon is a sales machine. Millions of people search on the platform for their next book every day.

If you can drive a handful of sales each month, your book is going to show up higher on the search results and capture more of those readers.

The first step here is to use Amazon Marketing Services for sponsored ads on your books. I spend about $20 a month on each book here and this works on two levels. Not only is the advertising profitable, you see here I’ve spent just over ten grand to produce almost $25,000 in sales, not only is it a positive return on my investment but those sales help keep the books ranked. If we scroll down you can see I’ve got quite a few ads going, usually two or three per book, and I’ll show you how to set one up here.

The Amazon dashboard here is really helpful in showing your ad spend on each campaign as well as the sales and your average cost, so how much you’re spending for every dollar earned. We can click through one and so I’ve spent just over $2,600 on this ad to generate $6,100 in sales for a return of about 134% which is pretty amazing when you think about it. Up here in the menu you can see for which book this is, so my book on the nine source of income I use for my blogs, and the keywords I’ve targeted on the ad. This is really helpful after you’ve started your ad, you can come back in here and see which keywords are driving sales, which you want to increase or decrease the bid. So let’s run through real quick on how to create an ad.

So I’ll go back to the main dashboard and click Create Campaign and then click on this sponsored products on the next page.

 

Name your campaign and make sure you include the book name here so you can tell it apart from other campaigns when you have more than one book. I would just leave this end date open to let the ad run continuously. You can put just about anything in on this daily budget because you won’t use it any day anyway. I set mine at $15 but have never spent more than $10 in a single day and that was across all my ads.

There just isn’t the number of impressions and clicks to use the whole budget. Next you’ll either let Amazon pick the keywords with this automatic targeting or you can pick your own. I usually pick my own and you can get a list of good targets by using the Google Adwords Keyword Planner to just download a list of related keywords. This bidding strategy is fairly new and just let’s Amazon adjust your bid up or down to help it rank better. It will mean spending a little more money but will also mean more sales so I usually allow both up and down bidding.

Next you pick the book you want to advertise and this will automatically populate with the books you have claimed in your Amazon Author Central account. Now while you’ll go in later and adjust individual bids on keywords, you start out with a default bid on all your keywords. Amazon likes to suggest a bid but I usually start with something like $0.32 or so and will adjust when I start seeing how the keywords are doing. Finally here, you’re going to put in the text for your ad.

If you’re not used to writing ad copy, I’d look around Amazon at some examples to get a feel for what to write. Anytime you search, the ads will say “Sponsored Ad” by the book so you can check out what they’re writing and kind of model your text after that. Now you just hit launch campaign and you’re all set. It will usually take about four to 12 hours to get reviewed and start serving up ads. On my 12 books and spending about $20 each per month, that’s enough to drive about 130 in book sales each month.

Now that alone is going to give you an advantage against millions of other books that don’t use this ad strategy but I want you to use these other two tricks as well. Another really powerful way to drive those few sales you need to stay ranked is by leveraging a blog or a YouTube channel.

Now I know, running a blog or YouTube channel doesn’t sound much like passive income and it’s not. These are legit online businesses and I make six-figures a year on four blogs and my channel, but it does take some work each week. If you can spend five or ten hours a week though, you’ll have a great place to advertise your books and you’ll make money from other income sources.

And while running that blog might not be passive income, it will be a passive source of marketing for your books. I usually have a banner here at the top advertising a book or one of my courses. You can scroll down and I usually have a few books shown in the side bar as well.

These images are all linked directly to my Amazon sales page so again, driving that handful of sales from the blogs to keep each book ranked and producing more sales on Amazon.

If you click through to a post, you’ll see that a lot of the individual articles have a callout and link to a book as well if it relates to the topic. Here in this article about how to make money on YouTube, I’ve linked my new book Crushing YouTube along with a discount. Finally here, another good place is to create a page of book recommendations highlighted in the top menu and add your books in there. On a YouTube channel, you can do videos covering specific parts of the book or anything related to the topic.

Then you just mention the book and refer to a link in the video description. Even if someone doesn’t click on the link but looks for your book the next time they’re on Amazon, it’s a great source of brand building for your business. I’d say the blogs and channel probably drive another 60 copies sold each month and it’s hard to tell because you’ve got so many other things going on but it’s a good chunk for each book.

Again, you don’t need to be getting hundreds of sales from any one of these sources but put them all together and it’s enough to juice that Amazon ranking algorithm. I probably sell around 200, maybe 220 copies of my books through these three hacks I’m sharing including the next one but that’s enough to keep the books ranked and sell another 400+ copies through Amazon without having to do anything else.

This next self-publishing trick is just to build a list of friends, family and other authors that you can use strategically to boost your book sales. Now I know everyone puts on their Facebook page when they launch a book. The post on there about their new book and say pretty please for the support…and then crickets chirping. The problem is, we’re all blind to these kinds of social media requests. We see dozens of them every day from hundreds of our “friends” and we ignore them all.

This kind of passive plea for support, even with your closest friends and family, isn’t going to do much for book sales. Instead, what you need to do is be strategic and direct about it.

Every month, reach out to 10 people in your contact list and ask them directly through a direct message to buy your book. You can drop the price to maybe $1.99 for a few days or just offer to pay them back.

You just need those few more sales to help that Amazon algorithm keep humming. Don’t be afraid to be direct here, reach out with a private message and tell them how much it means to you and you’d be happy to return the favor when they need it.
