WP Compress - Optimise Your WordPress Website For Better SEO  Rank higher on Google

WP Compress - Optimise Your WordPress Website For Better SEO  Rank higher on Google

Loading time has never been more important than it is right now in 2021  google has recently released a new update for their google search engine.

Which means  that loading speed on websites is so important and that is why today's product showcase is wp  compress not only does wp compress help you compress and optimize your images it also helps  you deliver the images and not only your images but also your files your javascript files and your  css files all of this will help your website load much faster and help you in the rankings on google.

But not only does it help with the files and your images you do also get caching and a cdn within  wp compress so without further ado let's dive into wp compress and let me show you how to use it i am inside wordpress here where we have wp compress installed it is a very simple  and intuitive plugin to use and as you can see here i'm very delighted to see a great design  that looks good and is easy to use we have some different elements where up here we can see that.

I have activated the live optimization where it will live optimize all of my images and make sure  they're in the right size all the time down here we can see a compression report where it showed me  how much i have saved on compressing and optimizing my images so for instance here  the 7th of july i have optimized my images and before.

I optimize them they were almost  taking the space of 40 megabytes whereas after i optimized them they're now taking 18 megabytes  so that's a huge improvement it is 50 almost and again over here we can see that it's a little bit  less and each day i have done some compression and then you can see the results of it here  overall when you take everything into account then i have saved around 53 in average when.

I  have compressed my website and my images so that's a huge huge benefit you can see it has optimized  33 megabytes so far and originally it was 71 megabytes.

And that's all my images combined  furthermore it has served 2093 files and that's of course when i go to the website it serves a  certain amount of files and when you go to the website it serves the same amount of files and  of course that adds up but in this period here it has served 2093 files and it is projected to  take the space of 128 megabytes over here you can see we have optimization mode that was also.

What i've shown you up here and this is basically whether i want it to be live or i want it to be  local which means that it's not live optimizing my website and my images i will always recommend  you taking this one and putting it on live so it will automatically without you have to do anything  optimize and compress your images down here you can see our optimization level where we can choose  either lossless intelligent or ultra of course ultra is not going to end up with a nice image  intelligent it will take what it thinks is the best for this purpose and the last less it will  try to optimize some of the data behind the image and not change so much the image because.

The image needs to look the same in order for the last list to be fulfilled furthermore down here  you can see some other settings i have enabled a lot of them the retina which is mainly for  macs then there is adaptive images and this is so important that you enable this one for google  this means that it will change the image sizes based on whether you are on a phone  a macbook or even a tablet or a huge screen like a tv for instance this is so important in order  for load times to load as fast as possible and when you run a google page speed report which.

I will do in a moment then you will also see how much it means because if you don't do it then it  will point it out and tell you to do it in order to achieve a higher score and the higher score  you achieve the better you will rank on google and of course there are a lot of other ranking factors.

But this is definitely some that they're taking a look at with the new update furthermore they have  their webp format this is the next generation format for images again you need to enable this  in order for google to see your website as a positive and a good loading website the last  one here is a setting that you can use if you're a photographer or you have very high quality images  you don't want to lose the data off because.

Here i will preserve the exif data and this is great if  you're a photographer for instance so definitely turn that on if you have high quality images  moving on to the pro settings here this is more of an overall settings it is not so much for images  it's an overall so you can see i have enabled all of them right now and what it will do is that they  will serve the javascript via cdn which means that it will find a server closest to the person  visiting the website and then it will make sure that the files are served from that server  so the distance the files has to travel is as short as possible so you can see i've done it.

With both javascript and css and a cool thing with wp compress which i don't see so often is that  it's possible to serve external files via a cdn so for instance amazon or if you're loading a library  or a script or something it is possible to serve it via the cdn you just have to enable this one  again this one i have enabled also where it will optimize the images when i upload them  because that's just easy and i don't have to manually go in and bulk or compress or optimize or  anything it happens automatically furthermore over here i'm deferring javascript this is again for.

The loading time it's happening automatically so i don't have to do anything except for just enabling  it down here you can see the css is the code that designs the entire website basically and within  the css sometimes we have images and often plugins cannot change the images because we need to change  the url to the images in order to serve them via the cdn this is also possible with the help of wp  compress you just have to enable this one and basically do nothing after that furthermore.

I  have disabled the wp emoji it doesn't do so much it's just something i usually do  and again down here it will replace all panzer.ai links which is the website we're showing right now  and replace it with the cdn link in order to again serve the images and the files and the  entire website as fast as possible because that's what it's all about down here you can see that we  can exclude css and javascript files we don't want to save from a cdn or something similar and last.

But not least down here is that if you have a sub domain that you want to run the cdm from you can  also do it here it is not so important but it is if you want to hide your cdn a little bit then you  can do that but that is overall the functionality within wp compress now i want to show you how a  google pagespeed report looks with wp compress enabled and with wp compress disabled so this  is the report where i have wp compress enabled and as i'm gonna talk about later in this video  wp compress is doing multiple things but it's not doing everything in order to achieve a high  score within google page speed so you can see here i'm scoring 17 on mobile and there's a lot  of stuff i need to do which is not related to images you will see in a moment when.

I show wp  compress being disabled but here you can see the issues i would be able to solve with another  plugin this is not something wp comprise can solve but this just shows that wp contrast is solving  what it needs to solve on the desktop version i am however scoring 79 which is pretty good  remember the google page speed is not something you need to work 20 hours a day in order to  achieve a high score just do the minimal amount of work in order to achieve the highest score you can.

And then move on because it is not make or break it with this score it is just a good indicator  in order to know whether you're doing it right or you're doing it wrong i have now run the report.

Without wp compress being enabled and what's funny here is we are actually scoring a higher score  however when you take a look at the issues it is now showing issues like you need to serve  the images in next generation formats and that's for instance webp that is something wp conference.

Solves for us it is however interesting that we're scoring a higher score with wp conference  disabled.

And the same when we go to the desktop again we're scoring a higher score however it is  still complaining about the images that we need to probably size the images that is the adaptive  feature that i showed you which needs to be enabled in order to set up wp conference the  best possible way for you you need to work a little bit with the features what.

I would  recommend you is that you enable one feature at a time and then go in and run a report and see that  if something is going the right way then keep on enabling features but as soon as you see it  going the wrong way disable that feature again and maybe another plugin can solve it in a better way taking a look at the pricing structure of wp compress it consists of three different  plans where they differ on the amount of websites you get the credits you get and in  the agency plan you do get a bit more 9 out of 10 times i will recommend.

You using the  personal plan where you do get 5 websites and one hundred thousand credits because within wp  compress everything runs on credits so every time you optimize an image you use one credit or every  time you serve a specific image you use one credit everything runs on credits within wp compress  if you are a photographer or you just have a lot of different visitors on your website the  professional plan is great for you you can use it on 25 websites and you do get 1 million credits.

And last but not least you do get x i f data because.

When you're a photographer you want to  keep that data you don't want the optimized file to show on your website you want the crisp image  that you took to show on your website so therefore take a look at the professional plan if you are a  photographer or you just have high quality images the last plan is the agency plan and this is great.

If you are a freelancer or you just have clients within your agency that you want to use this  plugin on because you are able to manage all of your clients within wp compress and you can set  limits on the different amount of credits that each of your clients can use if you do need more  credits than these plan consists of you can always buy extra credits taking a look at the competitors.

For wp compress it is quite difficult because wp compress not only optimizes your images as  you just saw it also helps with caching and delivering your files in the best optimized way  and that is why it's a bit difficult to find the closest competitors  however as i see it it is short pixel and eww as the closest competitors  these plugins and these companies are more refined than wp compress.

And they are able to compress  more images faster and more reliable however wp compress does have a way better design  their entire user interface is so intuitive and so great to use and as you hopefully just saw  you will also like using this it is so easy to get started when we compare the functionality to the  competitors i am a bit divided the reason being that short pixel and ewww they are only focused  on image optimization whereas wp compress they are also focusing on caching and delivering the  files in the css file and the javascript files in the most optimized way however when we take  a look at the core functionality which is the image optimization.

I will still say that wp  compress is a bit behind however taking a look at their roadmap and the future it is quite exciting  i did test out wp compress with wp rocket because even though wp compress does a lot  it does not combine the files and doesn't minimize the files and it doesn't minify the files for that  i was trying wp rocket wp rocket is another plugin that can help you optimize your website speed  overall not so much the images but the files and the way that your website is delivered the thing  that i did run into here was that wp rugged and wp compress running together was not possible.

They were constantly conflicting which meant that i couldn't get a high score on google page speed  and that is going to hurt me in the end i hope that this is something they will focus on in the  future because i tried everything from disabling a lot of the functionality within wp compress  for wp rocket to take over and wp compress only focusing on the image optimization and  the image compression however still i didn't succeed to run the two plugins together talking about the future they are very exciting things ahead before i do tell you the exciting  things.

In the near future they're working on optimizing the agency module so you more easy can  manage your clients and just set a lot of settings for your clients furthermore they're working on a  backup module where you can choose whether you want to backup your images in the cloud  locally or not at all this is a must-have in order to be able to go back let's say you compress an  image but the compression didn't go so well you want to use the original image with a backup  module that will be possible furthermore they are working on minor features such as bulk compression.

So you can compress multiple images at the same time they're working on that you can exclude  images if there are specific images you don't want optimized or compressed and last but not  least they're working on something i have missed.

Which is a functionality to optimize a single  image this is something i use a lot within short pixel where i can either optimize a single image  from the scratch or i can choose to re-optimize it into either a lossless a very hard or a medium way  to compress it and with the single optimization feature this will be possible now the exciting  things which are more ahead into the future are they're working on making plugins for squarespace.

Wix shopify those three platforms will soon be able to use wp compress however i do see  a conflict here because wp stands for wordpress.

So i think they either need to work on the name  a little bit in order to be able to promote them in the right way for squarespace wix and shopify  but it is the least of their problems first of all they need to make a plug-in that can do  exactly what they do at wordpress but on the other platform right now and of course  at the same quality last but not least in the near future they're working on adding.

The a  v i f format which is similar to the webp format but it is just another way of showing your images  in the next web generation using wp compress i have definitely been able to optimize my website  and just rank higher on google it is so easy and intuitive to just do all of these settings  it is just a click with a mouse and then you have optimized your website it is so easy.

And the entire plugin is so intuitive to use as you just saw it is so easy there  are very few settings and a lot of the stuff happen automatically and are live optimizing  so if you are getting started on wordpress or you just have a medium-sized wordpress  site.

I would definitely recommend you taking a look at wp compress  especially if you have any hopes of ranking on google because with the new update it is so  important so yeah that's my review of wp compress a great wordpress plugin to optimize the loading  speed on your website.

I hope that you liked the video and if you did please give it a thumbs up  if you have any questions to wp compress or other products you would like me to review please leave  a comment down below thank you so much for watching let's catch up on the next one you.

My 8-Step WordPress Blog Post Tutorial Optimization Checklist for SEO

My 8-Step WordPress Blog Post Tutorial Optimization Checklist for SEO

Are you search optimizing or SEOing your blog posts in WordPress before they go out? Pre-publish optimization in WordPress is so important, it could be the difference of your blog post being visible and Google or not. Plus it's just almost a crime to spend all of your time creating this epic amazing piece of content around a great keyword only for it to fall flat because it wasn't optimized properly on WordPress. In today's video I'm sharing with you my personal checklist that my team and I use every single time we publish one of our write blogs at express raters. If you follow each of these eight steps in my checklist you're much more likely to see results in google search rankings with your blog post and I'll even show you an example of one of the blog's we published this year using this optimization checklist that ranked in the top of Google for a high value keyword in just 30-days, so let's get going.

Before we get into my personal checklist of how to optimize your blogs and WordPress, a word to the wise; no matter how much you optimize a piece of content, no matter how great it is how comprehensive, it's really not going to work if your site, if your foundations are broken it's like trying to build a house on a shaky foundation, it's just going to crumble and fall in. So, if you're at that stage where you don't have a beautiful fast SEO friendly, well-designed website, stop right now make sure that gets fixed before you post and optimized free content. With that foundation of a fast clean beautiful site your results will be 10x whenever you start to publish optimized content and on the right blog we recently created and published this checklist of how to build content that ranks in Google, including some of those foundational tips, so the link to that will be in the video description definitely check that out.

Okay, so let's head over to my computer and I'll show you the 8-steps to take every time you schedule or publish a WordPress blog.

Ok, so here are first of all the steps that I'm going to go through for how to SEO optimized a blog post and WordPress and I'll give you this in the video description so definitely look for that but these are my 8-steps that I use my team uses anytime we publish any type of content.

Ok so our first step here is to load the blog we're going to edit, proofread it, we're going to upload all the corresponding images then we're going to go through the sub headers, those are our H2s H3s, we're going to make sure that all links open in a new window which is really important to lower bounce rate, so people don't leave your site.

Then we're going to include any relevant CTAs, we're going to add some social shares that make it really easy for people to share this content, then we're going to go into used at our meta title and description very important, then we're going to upload the right images in the right spots with alt text that is SEO friendly and finally we're going to optimize it for social sharing. Okay so let's go through each of these steps. I'm in my blog I'm going to hit add new for posts, I have a zip of all the content that I'm going to be adding. So, my blog post is titled this tone of voice and POV, how to correctly use bold for stronger more consistent brand presence.

Now I'm a big shortcut key fan, so I'm doing central V which is actually command on a Mac, okay I'm going to take this title, move it up here.

So, what we're doing right now is we're just loading in the blog and then we'll format it after we've added everything Okay so here's what our H2s look like we're going to have to go in the text editor for that and then we need to add this code, so that tells Google hey this is a header and an H2 is a primary header, H3 secondary header. So, one thing we really like to do in the write blog is we like to add all of our headers at the beginning, you can take that a step further and hyperlink each of these to the sub headers but this gives readers a really good view of what's coming and lists like these do really well in search.

So, sometimes these get inside of the featured snippets. Okay, so the rest of the content we need to make sure that it's broken up we've proofread it, we need to make sure all the sub headers are in correctly, so see how this is that is an H2 so this is an H3 anything that's a numbered list should be an H3 you should always have a header before a numbered list so that would be an H2.

So, what our tone of voice and point of view? Well we have two points explaining both and then in my content you'll see sub headers below the sub headers, so what we do for those is we just bold them I haven't found any value in an H4 if anything in H4 doesn't look it doesn't read well so I just avoid it and if we have a secondary sub header to an H3 we simply bold it.

And then all of our links open in a new window which we've double-checked, the way to do that is to hit edit on the link go to link options and then make sure that little box is clicked. Okay, so when it comes to CTAs, Ive done a lot of testing and I found out that it really works best if you keep those minimal it's best to have one two at the most three image CTAs and where we put our image see TAS are a lot further down, so here we only have one image CTA and this is hooked up to the services in our content shop. Sometimes, I'll add as a CTA where it's relevant like for example we've talked about writing style here a bit so what I might do is do a block quote format with italics and type in a CTA.

My 8-Step WordPress Blog Post Tutorial Optimization Checklist for SEO

So, this is a really good way to just add a CTA that's not at all annoying, you can make that go to a lead magnet a free eBook, we have a free eBook on the home page of this course, you can have it go to a book that you sell a course etc. Okay, so our one-click social shares, we do this with a plugin called click to tweet and all you do to generate that for example is you grab a sentence that you're going to use as the tweetable, you hit that button on the plug-in you have to install the plug-in on WordPress, you put it here, you're going to add the user name and then you hit OK and then it generates it, super simple, so definitely get that plugin consider doing that and then emojis, we found work really well or those little quick click to tweets, so check out this one, this one's kind of crazy but it works so well, it's really fun this is it this is a great way to social share a piece of content that you've done and then we've also referenced me as the author my handle here so that's another good thing to do if you have an author to mention in your click to tweet code Okay, so our last three steps are these we're going to go into Yoast now and make sure the meta title and description is added so that's all the way at the bottom you hit edit snippet make sure the SEO title reflects a variation of this, what we did is we shortened it down so it stays in that green area which means that's the right links and then we wrote just two sentences to describe the blog, getting your brand recognized requires the right tone of voice and POV.

Learn the difference between the two and how you can find your perfect brand points And then our keyword is tone of voice and I'm not really worried too much about the overall colors of Yoast because I found that these really don't matter to end results from your content, so we published over a thousand blogs and some of our top ranked blogs are actually orange, sometimes red and Yoast. So, worry more about the actual content does it read well is it going to engage your audience. Does it have a clear call to action that pulls that reader into the next step whether that's buying something from you calling, booking a call etc.

Those are the things you should be worried about rather than just a color on a plug in, software is fallible but whenever it comes to content a human eye it's really what it takes to make sure content is great Okay, so these last two parts are super important, so we're going to upload feature images to complete out our blog and I've already uploaded them but what it looks like whenever we get it from the designer is it's a zip folder of four images, so we do these sizes and then we do a CTA for each and every blog, so the header is sized correctly to show as a featured image at the top of your WordPress we have an Instagram image that we're going to share on Instagram and then we have this the inset is a really great image for a couple things and I'll show you what those things are right now.

Okay, so the featured image goes here, you don't want any text on this, you want this just to be a clear image and we've already uploaded it so you want to make sure the title and the alt text reflects the keyword, super important. So, go ahead and hit that set featured image and now we're going to add our inset and this inset image is sized to a couple things, so it reads well it's visible whenever you scroll down on the blog and we're able to put it in the social media area of Yoast which I just learned about this after six years of doing content.

So, what you want to do is upload an image and then upload that inset sized image, so this is strategic the size of this image, it'll show with the text and our branding our logo of the image, whenever we go and share this on Facebook, Twitter etc. so, it'll show whenever the link populates an image alright so once we've uploaded that image there you can even see Yoast gives you recommended size, we've modified the size a little bit to fit even more social platforms, so go ahead and hit update once you have those images added with the alt text correctly done.

So, we just finished those last two points, now the last thing I like to do is preview the blog so we've proof read this blog about five or six times at this point but that's what it takes to create great content, if you let a typo go out, if you let a sentence graph that reads like crap well people are going to notice it so see how this featured image doesn't have any text distracting from that the blog post because down here we have two title, that's how WordPress works, featured image title is usually right below it beside it and we have our nice inset image and because I have a couple social media sharing apps installed, one of them is actually telling me hey you can share this image, so that might happen for your reader too.

We have our table of contents, we have our click to tweet showing correctly, our sub headers are showing correctly, we have our nice CTA here, see how that blockquote style kind of gives it a little bit more readability as a CTA the sub headers look good images are all plugged in our click to tweets are showing correctly and then of course we end with our CTA. So, every link we've set to open in a new window, see how this blog stays there while it generates a link to our content shop. So, that's exactly what you want to happen with your links. So, I mentioned that I was going to show you an example, so I'm going to do that now.

Now there's something you might not know about Google but it's this fact that if you rank in the top position of Google, the click-through rate is as high as 31% if you rank somewhere near 10 it goes down to 1% and these optimization steps can really mean the difference between ranking in 1 or ranking all the way at the bottom So, here's a piece of content that we created this year and its ranking as you can see right here, right at the top, how to build a strong digital content strategy, right below the featured snippet, so it's ranking really well, we probably want to go back and update it soon because it's been more than six months which is my benchmark for updating content but this ranked at the top within 30-days and everything done on this blog follows the same guidelines, the same optimization steps that we just went through.

Search traffic is turning out to become 70% of the world's traffic now, that's where 70% of all online traffic comes from, so you want to get this optimization, your keyword research all of these stuffs down so critical to seeing success in ranking in Google and somewhere like this height of a spot.

Taking care of all of those small pieces inside WordPress may seem like busy work but I can't stress the importance of optimizing your blog before it goes out into the world. This attention to detail could be the difference between your content ranking in two, three, four, five versus the number one spot in Google which as we talked about gets so much of a higher click-through rate, they say the devil is in the details and that's pretty true. Now if you don't have time for all of this busy work this is something we do at Express writers in our blog packages, check out the link in the video description, we offer amazing done-for-you content packages for your blog where we can do everything from researching the right keyword to creating amazing content to all of those optimization steps in your WordPress which are WordPress savvy editors take care of, content marketing results is all about consistent content so check that out if you need help If you liked today's video if you learn anything new, give this video a thumbs up your feedback really encourages me to keep creating this type of content let you know in the comments, what you thought and don't forget to hit that subscribe button to come back for my new videos every other week.

Blogger - Tutorial for Beginners in 12 MINUTES!

Blogger - Tutorial for Beginners in 12 MINUTES!

Dear all, welcome to our first video tutorial dedicated to Blogger 2021, one of the best online platforms to realize your custom blog! In just 12 minutes we will see everything you need to know to create and edit your blog on Blogger. Blogger is the best option in case you want to build post and pages without learning coding and it is also much easier than Wordpress. To start with Blogger just visit its main page and click on Create Your Blog. Perform the login with your Google account and define the main name (or title) for your blog.

Choose a custom URL that will take .blogspot as main domain by default - we will see how to insert a custom domain at the end of this video.

Then define a Display Name (your profile name) and you are done. At this point you enter into your main blog panel, called Dashboard. A GDPR notice informs you that cookies are added on your blog automatically in order to be compliant with the privacy regulations.

To get a live preview click on View Blog in the bottom left corner. By default this has a very simple design with the main title on top, the post list at the bottom and your profile information on the left.

Let's see how to realize posts. You can start writing one by going to New Post. On top define the post name (or title) and then type the body content at the bottom.

You can also copy-paste any piece of text. On top you get several buttons to build your post such as the undo and redo buttons, Font type to change the font family and Font size to adjust its size. Make sure to select any text first. You can also apply different formats including Paragraph (or p HTML tag) and the several Headings (h1, h2 tags and so on). Next to it you can change the text style, its fill color or its background color.

With the link button you can also include hyperlinks, specifying the piece of text to insert, the destination address and the option to open the link on a new browser window. Click on Insert Image to browse for any image from your computer or any URL, adjusting alignment, size, captions and ALT attributes. Whereas with Insert video you can include any video from your computer or directly from YouTube, resizing it if you need. Moreover you can include emojis, adjust any paragraph alignment or add bulleted or numbered lists.

You can also drop quotes, horizontal separators and use Input Tools to define the correct language of your post.

If you are ready click on Publish on the right to apply all and make your post live. The editor just seen is the most simple and intuitive one called Compose view. You can also switch to HTML view to check or even write the direct HTML code used to realize your post.

This also gets updated when working with the Compose view. On the right side you have the Post settings.

Here you can add labels (or tags) to find your post on your blog or on the internet, change the post publication date or get the post Permalink, used to share the post anywhere. On Location insert any interested place and open Options to manage the comments permissions on such post. Use Update to apply and save all. As you save and publish posts, these will all appear under the Posts section and get listed on your Home Page according to the layout of your blog. This shows a bigger Featured Post (the latest article) and all the other posts at the bottom, composing the Page Body.

This is the default layout but you can fully change and customize it by opening the Layout section. Each layout is made by several elements, each containing one or more Gadgets. For example you can take the Sidebar on the left and hide your blogger profile from it or change the Gadget orders.

Make sure to save to get a quick preview of it. You can also add a new Gadget to include AdSense banners, custom HTML codes or search bars.

In the same way you can hide or show the Header on top, specify any Title or Description or add any image as background. You can also change the Featured Post appearance by showing or hiding title, abstract or thumbnail from it. On Page Body set the number of posts and comments to show. At the bottom you can adjust the blog Footer to add attributions and Copyright notices. Moreover you can open the Pages section to realize other blog pages besides the default Home.

You can go to New Page and then to the Compose or the HTML view as seen for the posts.

Blogger - Tutorial for Beginners in 12 MINUTES!

Then use Publish to save and apply all. This page is added and shown on your Dashboard but it does not appear on your blog automatically like the posts. It remains unreachable unless you share its permalink on your blog or on the internet. One of the best ways to do so is to add this link on a dedicated Menu.

To add a Menu go to Layout and then to Page List, adding all interested pages and adjusting their order. Now let's see how to customize the blog appearance! This is defined by a ready template called Theme. Up to now we have shown this one on top but there are loads of others available on Blogger that you can select, check and Apply live.

These Themes can change not just the basic appearance and color but also the overall layout of your blog.

On top you can go to Customize to edit your current theme in detail. From the left click under Background image to browse for any image to use as main background. You can also change the Main color theme on some pieces of text, menus and buttons, according to the options provided by the theme. If you need to customize more you have to include HTML codes as we will see shortly. Under Advanced you find other options to edit the elements you have such as background color, font style and color and also the colors on links, visited links and hover links.

It's time to build our own Internet

It's time to build our own Internet

Mirjana Čutura There are now more people addicted to Facebook than there are tobacco users worldwide - 1.2 billion daily active users of Facebook. Now, that number alone scares me, but it's when I'm in a bus or a train that I look around and I'm able to see it. It doesn't matter what city I'm in or what country, everywhere I go, I can see it.

I was born in the '80s, and when I was a kid, people would ask me, "André, what are you going to be when you grow up?" And I would think, "Uh, astronaut or how about bobsleigh racer?" Which is that winter Olympics car thing. I thought that would be awesome. But it never occurred to me - I couldn't even imagine that I would become a mobile app developer.

That's how fast technology moves.

A person can't even plan their own career. And you know, technology brings a lot of innovation and a lot of efficiency, but it's also bringing a lot of problems, and we're just starting to understand what those problems are. A person born in 2018 is born into a world of monitoring and control. A world without freedom. Even though it looks like we're free.

And it has all to do with the internet and the structures and the company involved in the internet. The internet is like a huge iceberg, and the visible part are these phones and laptops. We see them all the time. But underwater, there's a lot more going on. And if you want to understand the problems of the internet, we need to look underwater.

So, how does it work? If I send an email to a friend in another city, does my phone directly talk through radio waves to my friend's phone? No. First, your phone is communicating with the telecom tower nearby, and that tower is then plugged to internet cables in this region. Those cables are then connected to undersea cables that often go to another continent - in other words, America.

And in that continent, those cables are connected to a data center, which is a warehouse full of computers, servers owned by a company. Let's say Amazon or Google or Facebook or others. So, that's where your email is. And it zaps all the way back from those undersea cables back to your friend. So, this is the internet: a global structure of undersea cables and data centers.

And it's all happening all the time. They are going back and forth across the planet. And it's this structure which is creating a foundation for systems of control.

For instance, we have learned from the Snowden leaks of 2013 that surveillance and intelligence agencies are wiretapping those undersea cables so they know where each message is coming from or where it's going. Also sharks find those cables kind of tasty.

They like to bite them. And it, kind of, creates some problems sometimes, but it's not that serious. Governments have a button to shut down the internet in their country. Now, it's rarely used, but it has been used in Brazil, which is my country. WhatsApp is used by 100 million Brazilians daily to talk to friends and family but also for local business.

So, it's important for their economy. So, they do everything through WhatsApp. And one day, someone was using WhatsApp for criminal activity. And as part of the investigation, a judge ordered the app to be shut down in the whole country for three days. No one could use it for any purpose.

They have that power, and they use it. Not just governments but also companies have a similar type of power. We have learned how the social platforms can be abused for elections and politics.

But also on a more basic level, they could shut down your account. And I want you to imagine that, you know, they could shut your account down, okay, not someone else's.

Because this has happened to my sister. She had a normal Facebook page where she shared advice on personal financing: how to invest, how to save. Basic content, original content. One day, she woke up, and her page was banned. No apparent reason, so she read the terms of service to figure out what's going on.

It's still not clear, Why was she banned? And there's nothing that she can do to fix this. So, maybe it's time for us to create our own internet. But how are we going to do that? I mean, are we going to pass cables from one continent to another?

This is a huge infrastructure project. We can't just do it as people. But there's nice news here. The technology industry has accidentally, maybe not intentionally, invented all of the innovation and tools that we need for building our own internet. This is actually possible.

A couple of communities around the world are doing this kind of thing where they connect to each other. In New York, a 13-year-old started a community called NYC Mesh, where they set up antennas and routers on the rooftops of buildings, and they point those to other buildings, and they create one huge city WiFi. You could take this idea even further and connect cities to other cities to create a huge regional WiFi.

It's time to build our own Internet | André Staltz | TEDxGeneva

And that's what's going on now with Guifi.net in Catalonia in Spain.

Just connecting multiple cities across many kilometers. So, this is a possibility, but these regional WiFi networks, they are also connected to those undersea cables, which are then connected to the data centers. So, but here's a nice property: is that if the internet goes off or the companies do something and their systems go off, this network would still stay alive, and you could use it to talk with people within that network. Now, you wouldn't use a mainstream social network for that because, you know, that depends on the data centers on the other side of the world, but you could use custom software that is meant for that purpose inside that network. There are software now being built for this kind of things.

One of them is from a programmer in New Zealand called Dominic Tarr, who lives on a boat. Now, he lives on a boat, so he doesn't have stable internet. But he still wants to be connected to his friends, so he had an idea that, "OK, when I'm in the city and I have WiFi, what if I would download my friends latest comments and save them on my computer? So then, when I'm in a boat and I have peace, I can read those comments, and I could also write my own comments on my computer, as a file.

When I go back to the city, I can upload those comments and my friends can see them." It was an idea that worked out pretty well. He built it. It's an open-source and free social network, and a couple of thousand people around the world are using it today as a real social network. And it works for computers. So, I thought, you know, this is great.

I want to help somehow. I'm a mobile app developer, and I'm helping bring this for mobile.

And it's a normal social network, and it works. But now here's a catch: how are we going to compete with the mainstream social networks and the internet? Because, you know, honestly, we have internet connection all the time, and everybody's on these mainstream social networks.

But here's the thing: that's our case; that's not the case for everybody on the planet.

There's still four billion people that don't have internet connection. And one of these real cases is in the Amazon Rainforest, where indigenous communities there are facing threats from illegal activity from companies that are doing logging, mining and oil contamination. So, their situation's that their waters are being contaminated and their livelihood is at risk. So, they need to map all of those cases in their region where that is happening, and one of the solutions is with paper maps.

But they need to coordinate this, you know, between all those villages.

If they had stable internet, they could use something like Google Docs or Google Maps to collaborate with this. But they don't have that. But that's exactly what a non-profit from the United States called Digital Democracy is helping them. They're building software for collaborative mapping that works without the internet.

And this has worked well for them. They are collaborating also with local communities like the Alianza Ceibo in Ecuador and the Wapichana in Guyana. So, it works for them, and it works on computers.

They take these USB drives, and they walk around from one village to the other updating what was the latest changes to the maps. Now, you know, USB drives are old-fashioned, but as we speak, they are setting up wireless antennas on the treetops to create one huge regional WiFi.

And they're also writing software for phones so they can have a way of doing that through their phones. So, they're creating essentially their own internet there and their own software for collaborating. Now, this approach is useful not only in the Amazon Rainforest but also in Africa and South Asia, where still four billion people have no internet.

And companies like Google and Facebook are trying to bring internet to these people. But here's the thing: people don't need internet; people need interconnectivity, right?

People need to talk to each other. They don't need to be connected to the undersea cables and the data centers, right? So, and we know how to do that. With examples like Guifi.net from Catalonia in Spain, we know how to create huge regional networks.

And we know how to create software for these regional networks. So now, with our own infrastructure, we can be free from the control of governments. And with our own software, we can be free from the control of companies. People, this is actually possible. And it's happening right now.

Can you imagine that this movement would grow and come to every city in the world to create an internet made of freedom? In my view, it's going to be such a beautiful thing. Thank you.
